Where big data and IPv6 intersect

The founder of the Cloud Best Practices Network discusses the “X Internet” and what the growing volume of online data will mean for Canadian entrepreneurs

Certainly there is value in simply moving a ‘1.0’ app into the Cloud as-is, but there is more value in creating new ‘Cloud 2.0′ apps.

These apps are not just tapping into the Software-as-a-Service delivery model, they also represent an entirely new paradigm for software overall. Most notably they are being engineered to be ‘cloud-aware’, and are better integrated with and are leveraging key trends like the ‘Identity Ecosystem’.

It’s a smart strategy to aim to become a natively integrated part of an ever-expanding universe of social media, as the proliferation of Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin et al continues and also meets and absorbs cutting-edge Internet developments, such as the Identity Ecosystem and ‘Social Linked Data‘, as described by the inventor of the web Sir Tim Berners-Lee.

Software that exploits and accelerates these trends will be huge hits for entrepreneurs.

Another good way to understand the scale of these developments is to look at other expansive leaps of Internet technologies, such as IPv6, and also a concept called the ‘X Internet’ – Read a good overview here in this ZDNet article.

Also as described in more detail in this white paper from Motorola (11 page PDF) it goes beyond people sharing content on PCs and laptops to software running on any and all devices, from your watch to RFID tags, to share real-time data like stock control information.

X Internet capabilities will enable a plethora of disruptive innovations and associated business models,  inventing smart parking systems that can bill users automatically, major reinventions of retail and supply chain logistics via Smart RFID tags, intelligent sensors and more.

All of these smarter technologies will generate much larger volumes of data than we are traditionally used to, and their total sum is what is now called ‘big data’. From the real-time RFID chip location feeds through our mass of online social information, the Internet is generating an accelerating volume of online data.

One of the critical points the document makes is that this explosion of technology will create trillions of new Internet nodes, a scale that our current addressing system – IP version 4, can’t handle.

Like a postal address every unit on the Internet needs its own unique address, and while 4.3 billion is a lot, it’s still only less than one for every person on the planet. It was designed long before iPhones et al existed, and so it’s simply an old design that is now obsolete, having served a tremendously important purpose.

To scale for the next generation of trillions of nodes is what we need the new replacement protocol IPv6 for. It can scale to “one address for every atom in the earth’s continents or oceans.”

IPv6 can be thought of as the new addressing system for an equally new X Internet, this massive community of big data being generated and used by increasingly smart devices.

For entrepreneurs this presents not just a pie to be shared but one growing faster than it can be carved up, so it’s a hugely exciting time to be in the technology field. As Motorola says, ‘Imagine the Possibilities’ this new world of technology presents.
