The ‘It won’t happen to us’ DDoS fallacy debunked

An Arbor Networks security researcher talks about how ‘hacktivists’ are showing IT departments they’re systems are not as iron-clad as they may think


It’s unfortunate how often a false sense of security leads to greater pain when an organization’s systems go down thanks to ‘hacktivists’ who use distributed denial of service (DDoS) as their weapon of choice.

In a recent conversation with Allstream’s Craig Deveau, Dr. Jose Navario, senior director of security research at Arbor Networks, said many IT departments have been taken by surprise by attacks on their networks.

“They thought they were immune — either off the radar, or immune because of their network structure,” he says.
