The network could be down for hours thanks to a distributed denial of service attack without most staff having a clue what’s going on. That’s because many people still don’t understand what DDoS attacks are.

In a new video series, Allstream’s Craig Deveau interviews Dr. Jose Navario, a reseacher with Arbor Networks, about how DDoSes work and how IT departments can prepare to defend themselves against one. If nothing else, Navario says the available tools have gotten much better.

“Ten years ago, when this all first began, it was much harder. You had to write your own tools. Now it’s well within grasp,” he says in the three-minute clip.
